French Level 2
Unité 3: Leçon 4c
Le Métro: Luc

In the last leçon we discussed how to use metro tickets, how to find your destination on the map, how to choose lines and how to follow a line to the train you want to take. The sight that I want to check out in Paris is "la Notre Dame". Let's see if we can get there together. Make certain that your map is handy or check out the one below to help you on our voyage!

Once again, we will be leaving from the stop that is closest to our hotel, "Palais Royale/Musée du Louvre". The sight that I have chosen to visit is "La Cathédral de Notre Dame" (near the big number 11). The metro stop that is closest to "la Notre Dame" is titled: "Cité". Find "Cité" on your map (* Hint: The stop is a little to the left of the brown number 11.).

Judging from the distance on the map from our current location to our destination it should be relatively easy to get there. However, there is one catch, we are going to have to change lines. How and where do we do that? I'll "show and tell" you. However, I am going to ask you to try and figure out what is going to happen before I give you the answer.

Because the station, "Cité" is southeast (down and to the right) of our current position at "Palais Royale/Musée du Louvre", we will be taking the same metro train as we took in the previous leçon only this time we will be going in the opposite direction, away from the stop named "Opéra". What is the color, number, and name on the signs that will tell us how to get where we need to go? If you said, "Pink", "Numéro 7" and either "Villejuif-Louis Aragon" or "Mairie d'Ivry" you are 100% correct! The next question is, "How do we know where to get off?" See if you can guess before I tell you. If you guessed, "Châtelet", you win again! (I'm sure you noticed that "Châtelet" is a large station that has several different lines running through it.) Once we get to "Châtelet", what do we do to get to "Cité"? I'll bet you already have this one figured out: We change lines. Is this hard to do? Not at all. I'll explain.

To change lines, we'll be following the same basic steps we go through when we enter a station, meaning that we will look for the sign overhead that has the same color, number and name of the terminus (last stop) heading south (down) as "Cité". What will the three elements be? Try to guess before I tell you. If you said the color = "Red" (Yeah, I know it looks like some weird "purply-pinkish-reddish" color on the map. That's because something happened in the translation from map to web graphic. Looking at an actual map, the line is "Red"), the numéro = "4", and the name = "Porte d'Orléans" you are CORRECT!

*Remember that you do need tickets to ride the métro and be sure to check out the progression of the stations!

Remember that I told you that changing lines is like entering a station? That's because you will need to run your ticket through the barrier again (You can use the same ticket that you used at the first station because you are continuing your trip!). Once through the barrier, continue to follow the overhead signs until you reach the track. That's it!

It's time to move on to the assignment. You will be covering the new vocabulary that you learned in this Unité (ton, ta, tes and such) AND you will get to be the expert that will guide Victoire and Monsieur Charon to their destinations.

Oh yeah, one more thing: Once you have finished the assignment, feel free to register for French II - 2nd Quarter!

À bientôt!
