From Capitol Reef Country
Visitors to the Capitol Reef region will appreciate their options to experience great adventure and scenery within a close geographic area. To the southeast of Capitol Reef National Park is Lake Powell, which is part of the most unique national recreation area in the United States.

The town of Hanksville offers easy access to sparkling Lake Powell, where boaters, water sport enthusiasts and vacationers will find unrivaled beauty and endless recreation opportunities. Lake Powell is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that stretches from Canyonlands National Park (on the north) to the Marble Canyon (on the south). With it's many inlets and finger canyons Lake Powell offers nearly 2,000 miles of coastline. Of the six marinas around the 186-mile lake, Hite and Bullfrog Marina are the two most accessible from Hanksville. Hite, at the northern end of the lake, can be reached via UT-95 from Hanksville. Hite offers primitive camping, a gas station and a convenience store but boat access is limited due to low water levels.

More tourist options are available at Lake Powell's Bullfrog Marina, just 66 miles south of Hanksville at the end of UT-276. Bullfrog Marina offers a six-lane boat ramp, boat slips, gas stations and a pumping station, plus lodging, a campground, picnic area, fish cleaning station, marina grocery store and gift shop. From Bullfrog Marina visitors can take the John Atlantic Burr Ferry line across Lake Powell and pick up UT-276 again at Hall’s Crossing on the other side of the lake. These two marinas can also be reached from Torrey via scenic Highway 24 through Capitol Reef National Park to Hanksville.

One of the most popular sights on Lake Powell is Rainbow Bridge, the largest natural bridge in the world, which can be reached by guided boat tours. Daily full- and half-day tours are available from Bullfrog Marina.

Once you’ve got your lodging arrangements, head out to the lake for a day of boating, swimming, water skiing, wake boarding, or fishing for smallmouth and striped bass, walleye, catfish, crappie and bluegill. There are dozens of canyons to explore in and around Lake Powell, and sea kayaking is one of the best ways to see the lake canyons and ancient Anasazi ruins. A visit to the visitor center or John Wesley Powell Museum will round out your visit with in-depth information about the Glen Canyon National Recreation area and its history.
