If you are not sure if you are registered, one way to find out is to do a search for your own license and notice if you have an “FRN” assigned. Go to http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls and choose the search for licenses. Enter your callsign in the appropriate box on the form that comes up next. Press the “Submit” button. When a listing comes up showing your callsign, notice if there is an entry in the field called “FRN.” If there is, you are already registered.

If you find you are registered but you do not know your ULS password, you can request that your password be reset by going to https://esupport.fcc.gov/password.htm.

Registering is done on-line and is reasonably quick and simple. It entails giving the FCC your Taxpayer Identification Number (which for an individual is your social security number) and connecting it with any license(s) you may now have. To register, go to http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls and look for the “REGISTER CORES/CALL SIGN” link near the top of the page. Just follow the link and follow instructions. If you have trouble, it may be helpful to read the detailed instructions available on the ARRL web site at http://www.arrl.org/fcc/uls101.html. You can register with ULS even if you do not yet hold a license. During registration, you will be assigned a “Federal Registration Number” (FRN), a 10-digit number. When you attend a test session, you can enter this number in lieu of your social security number on the application form.

1. Check the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) database at http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls and follow the “search license” link. Select “By Licensee Name” in the pulldown for the type of search. Enter your last name, a comma, and your first name. This site is a bit more trouble to use than other sites on the World Wide Web, but it will show the results sooner than the others after an application is granted.
2. If your test session was one of the ones sponsored by UARC, check www.xmission.com/~uarc/Exams for a link to your test session. This page will show the progress of the session and results when available.
3. Check the ARRL's License Data Search at www.arrl.org/fcc/fcclook.php3, following the instructions to enter your name.
4. Check the callsign server (see below) maintained by the University of Arkansas at Littlerock and search using your name and state. If you include your middle initial, do not include a period. http://callsign.ualr.edu/
5. Check the callsign database maintained by the publishers of the "QRZ" CD-ROM. Enter your first and last names exactly as they were entered on your application form. http://www.qrz.com/i/names.html
6. Call the FCC at (888) 225-5322.
7. Call the ARRL at (860) 594-0300 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mountain time.
